DRURY BRENNAN
CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHY ARTIST AND CERAMICIST
This site was created as a final project for an Art History class at Kalamazoo College - Art Since 1945, taught by Dr. Christine Hann, Fall 2014
KREUZBERG BERLIN, 2013.
Brennan completed this piece shortly after moving to Berlin. "It took a long time and it was on a Saturday night / Sunday morning, so there were all these people that kept stopping and applauding and being super interested in what I was doing" (Brenan 2014). The piece remained up for three days before it was cleaned off the window. This was both the beginning and the end of a successful street art career for Brennan. "I heard soon after that you can lose your visa instantly if they catch you doing graffiti, so I decided that I better stick to legal things for the time being." (Brennan 2014) Not long after his piece was removed other people began to tag the same window which eventually had to be completely replaced. This piece - although a work of semi-traditional calligraphy is also very similar to modern street art. The use of colors, the illegibility etc. This blend of formalist techniques in the street setting challenges the viewer's preconceptions about art, space and the laws on graffiti. Is this, in fact graffiti?
