SKETCH SERIES
Traditionally, wheel thrown ceramics has been a medium for the home. Pieces are desired to be simultaneously functional while being aesthetically pleasing. Brennan has taken up that stigma and boldly challenged it by combining perfectly functional and artfully crafted ceramic forms with radical hand drawn text. This collection of work differs from his “Floral” series and the “Black and White” series in the sense that we see the artists hand at work here. There is a visceral physicality to the line quality which adds visual tension and challenges our notion that ceramic forms ought to be passive kitchen adornments devoid of any and all social or political charge. Many of these pieces possess the same stylistic elements of Brennan’s calligraphy work – that is, the text is often recognizable as the roman alphabet but we are unable to read it, to comprehend its meaning, yet we are still drawn to the work for its bold aesthetic qualities.
